    • Kobo Daishi Work in One Night"Mikata Ishi Kanzeon”

      Approximately 1,200 years ago, Kobo Daishi, who was traveling around the country, entered the mountains of Mikata and carved a Kannon statue into the Fudo Rock (granite) of this area in one night. However, when he heard the rooster crowing to announce the dawn, he descended the mountain leaving only the part of his right wrist remaining. For this reason, the statue is also known as the "One-armed Kannon" and is said to bring good fortune to those with disabilities.

      Asai Nagamasa, who was favored by Hideyoshi Toyotomi and became the lord of Wakasa, made it an important transportation and military location and post town in 1589. Wakasa road that passes through Kumagawa-juku was called the Saba Kaido road because it transported seafood such as mackerel from the Sea of Japan to Kyoto.It is currently designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

    In summer, you can swim in the sea and interact with seaside creatures.
    A five-minute walk along the beach will take you to Wakasa Mikata Marine Park.

  • Mikata Five Lakes

    Mikata Five Lakes are a scenic spot located in Wakasa Bay Quasi-National Park and are also registered under Ramsar Convention.
    There is a promenade on the shore of Lake Suigetsu within the natural bird and animal sanctuary, where you can stroll and observe wild birds playing near the water.
    From Lake Suigetsu in Wakasa Town, you can take the town-operated Mikata Five Lakes Sightseeing Boat cruise, and from the Lake Center at Lake Kugushi in Mihama Town,
    Mikata Five Lakes sightseeing boat runs through Urami River and travels around Lake Lake Suigetsu, Lake Suga, and Lake Mikata, allowing you to enjoy the scenery of Mikata Five Lakes from the surface of each lake.
    The five lakes have different colors due to differences in depth and water quality, and you can see the beautiful five-colored lakes from Umegatake Summit Park at the top of Rainbow Line.

  • Tourist attractions in Wakasa area (Mihama Town - Wakasa Town - Obama City)

    Obama City, the neighboring town of Wakasa Town, is home to many temples, including the national treasure Myotsu Temple and Jinguji.
    It is a treasure trove of cultural assets dotted with over 130 historic old temples.
    It takes about 30 minutes by car from Wakasa Town to Obama City.
    Also on Mihama Town side are Hiruga Offshore Fishing Pond and Suishohama, which is popular for its beautiful beach and blue sea.
    Mihama Town can also be reached in about 30 minutes by car.
